Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS)

The MBS is a listing of the Medicare services subsidised by the Australian government and is part of the wider Medicare Benefits Scheme managed by the Department of Health and Ageing and administered by Medicare Australia.

MBS Items Online Checker

The MBS Items Online Checker can be used to determine if an identified MBS Item has been claimed for a specific patient within a pre-defined period of time.

The Online Checker will advise you if you are eligible to claim a Medicare benefit for that particular service, based on the patient’s Medicare history.

You can access the MBS Items Online Checker through HPOS by using your PKI Individual Certificate. For more information, visit Services Australia.

Practice Incentive Program (PIP)

PIP provides a range of incentives that aim to encourage accredited general practices to improve the quality of care provided to patients.

PIP Eligibility

To be eligible to participate in the Practice Incentive Program (PIP), a practice must be accredited or registered for accreditation, against the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) Standards for general practices and must be accredited within 12 months of joining.

Practices must hold public liability insurance and all General Practitioners at the practice must have current professional indemnity insurance.

Worforce Incentive Payment (WIP)

The Workforce Incentive Program (WIP) – Practice Stream began on 1 February 2020 as part of the 2018/2019 Stronger Rural Health Strategy. It aims to build a sustainable and high quality health workforce, particularly in rural and remote areas, by better targeting incentives.

WIP provides incentives to general practices who employ nurses, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health workers and practitioners, and allied health professionals.
