Information Security Guide for Healthcare Businesses

Your practice has access to valuable digital information entrusted to you by healthcare consumers, suppliers and employees. The information and systems your business uses to access and store this information are critical to its ability to operate. Therefore, the Information Security Guide for small healthcare businesses has been developed by the Australian Digital Health Agency and the Australian Government's Stay Smart Online service.

Selecting Secure IT products and services

The Australian Digital Health Agency has produced a guide for healthcare providers that outlines a range of IT security considerations, and includes sample questions for healthcare providers to ask their IT vendors, to assist with selecting secure IT products and services. This guide may support activities such as shared care planning systems and other communications mechanisms between health providers, and is a companion to ADHA's Information Security Guide for Healthcare Businesses. The RACGP has a more in-depth publication on Computer and information security standards which shares the same goal of implementing safe security measures to protect patient information held and transmitted by digital health records.

Using email in general practice

GPs and general practices often receive requests from patients, other clinicians and third parties to send health information via email. As all health information is sensitive by nature, all communication of health information, including via electronic means, must adequately protect the patient’s privacy. GPs, patients, and other healthcare providers may not always appreciate the risks associated with using standard unencrypted emails in the healthcare environment. The RACGP has developed the fact sheet Using Email in General Practice to provide information for general practices about using email to communicate health information with patients, health organisations, and third parties, and to support practices to make an informed decision whether to use email at their practice.
