This event is designed to enable local GPs the opportunity to engage with leading surgeons and dietitians around the role of surgery and diet in patients with obesity and metabolic related comorbidities. It will also address updates and identify relevant risk factors to consider when assessing patients.

Learning outcomes

  • Define the different types of weight loss surgery
  • Explain weight loss surgery in the treatment of obesity
  • Describe the selection process for patients who are eligible for weight loss surgery including the role of the GP
  • Recognise the role of the Bariatric Dietitian including the importance of long term follow up for ongoing health, lifestyle and behaviour modification and to enhance overall success of weight management outcomes
  • Outline the referral process for patients in need of this treatment in the Nepean Blue Mountains LGA
