Caring for COVID-Positive Patients in the Community

healthdirect COVID-19 Notification Model 

The healthdirect secure messaging notification model has now replaced the NSW Health notification process to provide appropriate clinical care for people who are at higher risk of developing severe disease, or higher risk of getting unwell from COVID-19. healthdirect's NSW Connected Care Model webpage outlines the new notification process and includes implementation guidance, and support for GPs. GPs can also watch the RACGP webinar for more information on the healthdirect model.

Phone Support and Referral

GPs can contact NSW Health to refer or escalate patient care:

  • National Coronavirus Helpline on 1800 020 080. This line operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week (including public holidays) with additional options for priority groups.
  • If emergency assessment is needed, call 000 arrange ambulance transfer to the nearest emergency department, ensuring notification of COVID-positive status.
