Urgent Care

Medical care for urgent non-life-threatening injuries and illnesses that can be managed without a trip to the emergency department but cannot wait for a regular appointment with your usual GP.

Available in
Blue Mountains Hawkesbury Penrith

What is this service?

Urgent care provides care for people who need urgent medical treatment but do not need to go to the hospital.

Urgent care offers timely care for minor injuries and illnesses such as fractures, infections, cuts, sprains, and other non-life-threatening conditions. It gives people more options to see a doctor when urgent, but not life-threatening, care is needed.

Urgent care does not replace the need for you to have a regular GP, who should always be the first point of contact for your healthcare needs. Urgent care does not provide healthcare services such as vaccinations, preventative health screening, mental healthcare plans, or chronic disease management.

Benefits

Urgent care makes it easier to access urgent medical help quickly, especially when your regular GP is unavailable. They give you more options to see a doctor when urgent, but not life-threatening, care is needed.

You’ll benefit if you:

  • have a minor illness or injury that needs same-day attention
  • want to avoid long waits at an emergency department
  • cannot get an appointment with your usual GP
  • need care outside standard general practice hours

Urgent care can give you more options closer to home and help reduce pressure on local hospitals.

Eligibility

You can attend urgent care if you live or work in our region and have an injury or illness that needs urgent attention but is not life-threatening, such as:

  • closed fractures
  • wounds (or injuries requiring stitching)
  • mild burns
  • leg ulcers
  • gastro
  • conditions requiring IV treatment
  • urinary tract infections (UTIs)
  • ear, nose and throat infections
  • respiratory illness, bronchitis
  • rashes
  • small abscesses needing drainage
  • and more

Urgent care services are bulk-billed for those with a Medicare card and interpreters are available if required.

Do not attend urgent care for chest pain or tightness, breathing difficulties, uncontrollable bleeding, severe burns, poisoning, numbness or paralysis, ongoing fever in infants, or if the patient is unconscious, unresponsive, or having seizures. Call triple zero (000) or go to your nearest emergency department.
