Suicide Prevention

Support services for people who are having thoughts and feelings about ending their life.

Lifeline provides all Australians experiencing a personal crisis with access to online, phone and face-to-face crisis support and suicide prevention services.

Peer Led Aftercare

For people who may be leaving hospital after a stay related to suicide, a peer led service is available to help support consumer transition back home and in to the community. The Peer Worker will ensure a consumer is linked in with appropriate community supports to manage ongoing care.

This service is only available to people being discharged from hospital. Referrals are made internally with the Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District.

Seek out Support (SOS) Psychological Therapy Service

For people at low to moderate risk of suicide or self-harm the NBMPHN Seek Out Support (SOS) service is available. People who are at risk are eligible to receive unlimited support hours with a mental health professional within a two month period.

'Those eligible for this intensive service are put in contact with a provider within 3 working days from referral date. This service can support people aged 14 years and above and interventions can include family members and/or carers of the person being referred.

Family or friends considered at risk in the aftermath of suicide are also eligible for the service.

People who are at high risk of suicide, who present under the influence of alcohol or drugs or who are experiencing psychosis are not appropriate referrals for this service. 

A person must be assessed and referred by a GP (or in some cases a psychiatrist or paediatrician) to receive the NBMPHN SOS Psychological Therapy Service.

We are currently experiencing excess demand for this service which is impacting service delivery. To assist us in managing this demand, we are asking GP referrers to carefully assess patients and consider other suitable care options to ensure the service is limited to eligible patients. All Hours Suicide Support

Formerly named the ‘ATAPS After Hours Suicide Support Line’, the All Hours Suicide Support Service (AHS) is a specialised service designed to complement allied health professionals working within our Psychological Therapy Services program.  
AHS provides support to clients who are low-to-medium risk of suicide 24 hours a day, seven days a week, ensuring all clients have access to professional support around the clock. 

AHS offers intermittent and short term professional telephone counselling for individuals who are at a low to medium risk of suicide, when their usual allied health professional is unavailable. The service can also support an individual as an outpatient, or when they are in the process of linking with a Psychological Therapy Services registered allied health professional. 

Individuals participating in the Psychological Therapy Services program can call the hotline on 1800 859 585 at anytime. In order for participating patients to receive outbound calls, a GP or participating allied health professional should refer that patient via email to the service at least twenty four hours prior to when the first call is due.
