For General Practitioners

Management of the emergency patient is a subject that all general practitioners are well versed in but, experience is often not available until an emergency occurs. This training workshop will equip GPs with the knowledge & skills to manage medical emergencies in general practice.


  • Identification and management of poor perfusion
  • Signs and symptoms of life threatening conditions
  • Use of pulse oximetry and observation of vital signs
  • CPR including Team CPR and the use of defibrillators
  • Introduction to the ECG
  • Use of Laryngeal Masks and Bag/Mask ventilation
  • Oxygen therapy and titration recommendations
  • Emergency Drugs

Learning outcomes:

  • Identify the most common medical emergencies affecting patients, using a risk management approach
  • Manage the immediate care of medical emergencies utilizing a practice management (crew resource management) system
  • Apply techniques and protocols consistent with current emergency medical guidelines for pre-hospital care
  • Refer the patient to further appropriate care

This workshop is an Active Learning Module. GPs are eligible for 40 Category 1 points upon completion of a pre-disposing activity, 6 hours education and a reinforcing activity.  In addition, GPs will receive 5 Category 2 points for CPR.
