Antenatal Shared Care Information

Information and resources to help GPs learn more about the Antenatal Shared Care Program in our region.

What is Antenatal Shared Care?

Antenatal shared care is joint care by a GP and a participating hospital’s antenatal clinic for a pregnant woman with no adverse fetal, pregnancy or maternal risk factors. Antenatal shared care provides pregnant women with choice, and continuity of care.

The Antenatal Shared Care Program in our region operates with Blue Mountains and Nepean Hospitals only. To become a recognised GP provider of antenatal shared care in our region, you must register through our PHN. We manage the list of GPs who provide antenatal shared care and share this with the antenatal clinics of Blue Mountains and Nepean Hospitals.

Registering to Provide Antenatal Shared Care

To be a GP provider of antenatal shared care in our region, you must register for the Antenatal Shared Care (ANSC) Program through our PHN.

You will be required to:

  • provide evidence of current Medical Registration
  • provide evidence of current Professional Indemnity Insurance
  • attend an ANSC Program Orientation Session

GPs wanting to participate, can register their interest by sending an email to the Primary Care team.

Advice on upcoming orientation sessions will be provided after your application is assessed.

Ongoing Educational Requirements

GPs providing antenatal shared care are required to undertake six hours of pregnancy-related education each year.

Relevant educational activities can be completed through online education platforms or in person, through our continuing professional development (CPD) and training opportunities or through other organisations.

Our CPD and training opportunities are updated on our website regularly. You can also visit the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG) Events Page for upcoming meetings and CPD approved events.

GPs who attend non-PHN CPD education are required to submit their certificate of attendance to us to maintain ANSC Program registration. These can be submitted by email.
