Curing Hepatitis C in General Practice

11 April 2018

Short, simple and well tolerated cures are now available for most patients with chronic Hepatitis C. This disease remains a significant public health issue in Australia and GPs are an essential part of the management team, from identifying people who may be at risk of infection to diagnosis and monitoring of liver disease.

With the new direct-acting antiviral agents now available on the PBS general schedule, it is important that all GPs are aware of the available Hepatitis C (HCV) treatment strategies.

Below are a several resources that may assist GPs:

  • HCV Treatments Quick Reference Tool - This resource from the Australasian Society for HIV, Viral Hepatitis and Sexual Health Medicine is an easy-to-use, quick reference to aid treatment decision-making.
  • Managing Hepatitis C in Primary Care - NPS Medicinewise Webinar: provides training in the diagnosis, treatment and ongoing management of people with chronic HCV.
  • Curing Hepatitis C in General Practice - RACGP Webinar: assists GPs to identify priority groups for testing; interpret test results; diagnose HCV;  and initiate treatment, monitoring and follow up.
