Samoan community members are seven times more likely to present to hospital with diabetes complications, and are also more likely to die of preventable diseases such as heart and kidney disease. This workshop offers GPs and Practice Nurses the unique opportunity to learn about Pacific Islander cultural views, providing the principles, knowledge and skills to promote respectful and culturally competent patient care to improve patient outcomes.

The workshop will also explore screening techniques to help identify diabetes among at-risk patients at an early stage.

Learning outcomes

  • Recognise and value Pacific Islander community and family structure, religion and spirituality, health beliefs and practices, cultural protocols and societal factors affecting healthcare.
  • Learn skills in the engagement and support of individuals, their family and communities through use of language interpreters, providing patient-centered care.
  • Describe and compare current diabetes screening methods.
  • Identify the goals for diabetes care and the impact of the diagnosis method on the likelihood of self-care and ongoing care.
