We were pleased to announce that Parramatta Mission will establish and operate the new headspace service in Katoomba.
Parramatta Mission has more than 40 years’ experience in developing and implementing mental health programs and currently operate two other headspace services in addition to various other youth programs.
In developing the plans for this service we have taken the time to do extensive consultation to ensure that local needs are being met. Over the last five months we have consulted with young people, schools, other service providers and Blue Mountains City Council to ensure that the community has had input into our plans.
In December, we co-hosted a Youth Roundtable event with Senator Marise Payne, which was attended by 40 community members including 16 local young people and the Federal Member for Macquarie, Susan Templeman.
During these consultations, young people have clearly told us that what they want is a safe space, a place to feel loved, supported and accepted. They want ownership and the opportunity to help shape the service. We believe that with Parramatta Mission’s experience operating headspace Penrith and Mt Druitt, that they are well placed to deliver this in Katoomba.
We are passionate about improving the mental health of our local communities and have been working hard to advocate for additional youth mental health services in our region. Early intervention programs like headspace are critical, as they not only impact young people’s lives in the present but can influence the whole community as these young people mature into adulthood.
We are excited to be partnering with Parramatta Mission to deliver this vital service to the upper mountains community. We look forward seeing this service become operational by mid-2020.
