HealthPathways Celebrates One Year!

This month marks one year since HealthPathways was launched in our region!

HealthPathways is a free, online health information portal for healthcare professionals that has been designed to be used during patient consultation. From this single website, GPs can identify the most effective treatment and management options using locally developed clinical guidelines, and quickly determine the relevant local specialists and services for their patients from an up-to-date service directory.

Content is developed collaboratively by GPs, hospital clinicians and other relevant health professionals in our region. Working together on this program has helped facilitate improved integration between services and enhanced working relationships between primary healthcare providers and our Local Health District.

HealthPathways was originally developed in Canterbury, New Zealand in 2008 where 99% of GPs now use it weekly, and 70% daily. Since then it has been adopted and adapted by other health systems around the world.

Since our regions launch a year ago, 150 localised pathways have been created and viewed over 25,000 times by more than 1,300 active users, with these numbers growing daily. With 40-50 new pathways currently in development, HealthPathways is fast becoming an integral tool for GPs in our region.

Local Penrith GP Dr Hany Gayed is passionate about HealthPathways and in this video says that he uses it at least once or twice a day in everyday practice.

Dr Cheryl Ou Yong, a GP Registrar in our region had this to say about HealthPathways:

"HealthPathways made my transition to the region a breeze. As a trainee from out of area, I was worried about not knowing the local referral networks. HealthPathways helps me to practice efficiently, allows me to provide a good quality of care and also keeps my patients happy as all provider details are at hand. Most medical conditions are at the tip of my fingers and knowing that they contain local best practice information and resources gives me peace of mind."

My thanks and congratulations go to the dedicated HealthPathways team made up of PHN and Local Health District staff, and our GP Clinical Editors, who have made this milestone possible.
