A new after hours service provider for Penrith

Our company and its predecessor organisations have been managing the Nepean After Hours GP Clinic for just over 10 years. The clinic was established in December 2006 by the then Nepean Division of General Practice in response to an identified need for better availability of GP after hours services. The clinic has been staffed by local GPs on a roster and nurse and reception staff.

As mentioned in my blog post of 23 March 2017, Primary Health Networks are working under a new model of commission services rather provide clinical services directly.

In line with this, we undertook a tender process late last year to identify a provider to manage and operate an after hours clinic in the Penrith region to replace the current Nepean After Hours GP Clinic.

The tender selection process involved an assessment panel which included GPs, an After Hours service provider from a neighbouring region and NBMPHN staff. Penrith After Hours Doctors was selected as the new service provider.

This means that the current Nepean After Hours GP Clinic on the grounds of Nepean Hospital will operate until 30 June 2017. Due to the expansion of Nepean Hospital’s services, which will occupy the area of the current Clinic, from July 1 2017 after hours GP services will be provided at Penrith After Hours Doctors at Nepean Shopping Village (Station Street, Penrith).

The bulk billing clinic will be open from 6pm to midnight Monday to Friday and from 3pm to midnight Saturday, Sunday and public holidays. There will be 2 doctors or 1 doctor and a nurse working at the clinic. As is the case with all after hours doctor services we commission, a report on the visit will be provided by the clinic back to the patient’s regular GP the next day for ongoing care and follow up.

The new after hours service location remains in the central Penrith area, within easy access of a 24 hour pharmacy and accessible by public transport. Ample car parking and onsite security is also available. All features that the local community has told us are important when needing to access after hours medical services.

NBMPHN also supports After Hours Clinics in the Hawkesbury and Blue Mountains and a number of home visiting services.

A directory of local After Hours services can be found on this website.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank those GPs, nurses and reception staff who have worked at the Nepean GP After Hours Clinic over the last ten and a half years. They have contributed to the success of the service and their commitment and dedication has enabled residents to access non-urgent medical care for conditions that just can’t wait until the next day at times when their GP is closed. This alleviates pressure from the emergency department. We are pleased that an after hours doctor clinic will continue to be provided in the Penrith region to continue to support better health for the community.
