We are delighted by the Australian Government's announcement yesterday that it will provide $1.45 billion over the next three years to strengthen mental health services and support job security in the sector.
In this announcement, the Government has committed to a new funding model for PHNs which will mean that funding for mental health services will be extended for three years from July 2019. Each year, funding will then be extended for a further year subject to a PHN meeting agreed performance measures.
We, collectively as PHNs, have been advocating for this change for some time and I am pleased that the Government has listened to our concerns and taken action. This significant outcome will allow us the opportunity for longer term planning, provide greater job certainty for those working in the sector and importantly, provide continuity for services - which will translate into the delivery of better mental health outcomes in our communities.
I am excited about planning for the future of mental health services in our region with this new funding certainty.
