Reflecting on 2018

It has been another busy and exciting year for us as we support quality primary care, commission valuable services and facilitate more integrated care in our region.

Someone asked me recently, what inspires me in my work. I reflected on this and said it is hearing the stories from clinicians and consumers about what is and isn’t working in healthcare, and knowing that our organisation has the ability to affect positive change for some of those things.

It may seem like a small drop in the ocean, but for every person that now has access to care they didn’t have previously, because of a service we have commissioned or for every healthcare practitioner who’s working life is now a little easier, because of the support we have been able to provide - that is what inspires me.

HealthPathways Celebrates One Year!

This month marks one year since HealthPathways was launched in our region!

HealthPathways is a free, online health information portal for healthcare professionals that has been designed to be used during patient consultation. From this single website, GPs can identify the most effective treatment and management options using locally developed clinical guidelines, and quickly determine the relevant local specialists and services for their patients from an up-to-date service directory.

Content is developed collaboratively by GPs, hospital clinicians and other relevant health professionals in our region. Working together on this program has helped facilitate improved integration between services and enhanced working relationships between primary healthcare providers and our Local Health District.

Australian Digital Health Agency Visits Our Region

Last Friday we were proud to welcome the Australian Digital Health Agency CEO, Tim Kelsey, and their Chief Medical Advisor, Clinical Professor Meredith Makeham, to our region to learn more about the use of My Health Record on the ground.

Our region was one of only two in Australia included in the 2016 My Health Record Opt-Out Trial and as a result, over 95% of our residents already have a My Health Record. Being almost two-years ahead of the rest of Australia, has given us the important opportunity to share our knowledge and experiences to help improve the system, and to spread the positive message that My Health Record can, and will improve patient outcomes.

My Health Record National Expansion

For the rest of Australia, 16 July marked the launch of the three month opt-out period for the Federal Government’s My Health Record expansion program. In our region, most residents already have a My Health Record, with less than 2% choosing to opt-out when the Nepean Blue Mountains was one of only two regions in Australia included in the 2016 My Health Record Opt-Out Trial.

Our Digital Health Strategy is Launched

I am delighted to announce that yesterday we launched our Digital Health Strategy for 2018-2021.

Digital technology is transforming healthcare. It has the power to improve access to services, increase provider collaboration, and facilitate the delivery of safe, high quality and effective healthcare which ultimately saves lives.

I am proud that we have been one of only two regions to lead Australia in digital health adoption through the My Health Record trial, and one of ten regions to be trialling the Health Care Homes initiative. Due to the success of the My Health Record trial, by the end of this year every Australian will receive a My Health Record, unless they choose not to, and we will once again take a leadership role in the expansion program by managing the Regional Communications Strategy for NSW and ACT.
