Reflecting on 2018

It has been another busy and exciting year for us as we support quality primary care, commission valuable services and facilitate more integrated care in our region.

Someone asked me recently, what inspires me in my work. I reflected on this and said it is hearing the stories from clinicians and consumers about what is and isn’t working in healthcare, and knowing that our organisation has the ability to affect positive change for some of those things.

It may seem like a small drop in the ocean, but for every person that now has access to care they didn’t have previously, because of a service we have commissioned or for every healthcare practitioner who’s working life is now a little easier, because of the support we have been able to provide - that is what inspires me.

Launch of Doctor Closed Campaign

Up to two-thirds of emergency room patients presenting at night and on weekends could have been treated at an after hours GP service, according to local data.

Most people would prefer to see a GP rather than go to an emergency department but many people don’t know what other options are available.

This Christmas season, to support people to access the right medical care and help reduce the burden on our emergency departments, we have launched a new campaign called Doctor Closed? to help our residents find what local after hours medical services are available in our region.

A new after hours service provider for Penrith

Our company and its predecessor organisations have been managing the Nepean After Hours GP Clinic for just over 10 years.

The clinic was established in December 2006 by the then Nepean Division of General Practice in response to an identified need for better availability of GP after hours services. The clinic has been staffed by local GPs on a roster and nurse and reception staff.

What is Commissioning?

Since the formation of PHNs in July 2015, we have gradually been making changes to the way we manage the provision of some health services. 

One area of change in particular that warrants greater awareness within the community is the use of a 'commissioning' approach in how we may deliver healthcare services to meet local health needs.
